The Day of the Dead is a Mexican national holiday dedicated to the commemoration of the departed. The holiday falls on October 30, near the homonymous Catholic holiday celebrated on November 2.
During this period, families honor their departed decorating graves with sugar skulls, marigolds, food and drinks they liked in life.
The celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead draws its origins from the indigenous culture and, perhaps, from the Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl or "Lady of the Death". The festival fell in the ninth month of the Aztec calendar (more or less the beginning of August) and was celebrated for an entire month.
Currently, the holiday covers a period of three days and the most common symbols includes skulls, used since pre-Hispanic era as a symbol of death and rebirth.
The skulls, which represent a departed soul, are made of sugar by skilled artisans, whose craft is slowly disappearing. Sugar skulls had the name of the dead written on the forehead and is placed on the graves to honor the return of a particular spirit.
They often have big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments. They are edible and the most common ingredients used for the construction are: powdered sugar, egg white, corn syrup, vanilla, and corn starch.

The SugarCollection Team is proud to post this simple and nice recipe sent by Wikizero.
Colored sugar cubes
I suggest to all collectors, a fun recipe to make homemade sugar cubes of different shapes and colors, with decorations and, for the more adventurous, keep them in alcohol.
The recipe is fast and simple, the preparation time is estimated at about 10 minutes, plus a couple of days off.
Material and ingredients:
- White sugar (preferably superfine);
- Water;
- To coloring or flavoring the cubes you can use food coloring or natural flavorings (coffee, mint, orange juice, etc.).
- Molds of various shapes (such as for ice or cookies);
- If you want to apply decorations, you need also a little sugar icing.
For cubes in alcohol:
- Ethyl alcohol 95° C;
- Choice of flavoring (mint, basil, lemon peel, pepper, etc.).
Procedure:
Pour sugar into a bowl and add a few drops of food coloring (if the food coloring is in powder form, dilute with water). Mix well with a spoon to smooth the color (if necessary add more food coloring or sugar). Add very little water at a time to wet sugar, until, stirring, you get a grainy effect.
Dampen just the inner sides of the molds and put the sugar, pressing very well, with great patience!
Leave to dry the molds outdoors (preferably in the sun) for at least two days. To speed up you can put on a radiator or oven to 60° C for about 30 minutes. To test if ready, extract a cube and make sure it’s dry, compact and does not crumble.
Now you can apply decorations on cubes using, as glue, a bit of icing, made with powdered sugar and a few drops of water.
To achieve an optimum "digester", you can put the cubes in alcohol.
Just put the cubes in a glass jar together with a flavoring and fill the jar with ethyl alcohol to cover the cubes. Let the jar sealed for at least a week. If you want to replace ethyl alcohol with other spirits, remember that the sugar cubes dissolves themselves in any liquid below 90° C.
Be careful not to drive after tasting it, because they are very strong!

Recently, in some italian bars were found a sugar packets that carry a racist joke, offensive and disrespectful about the tragedy of the Shoah and the Holocaust.
Probably that packets were delivered in many bars in the central and northern Italy.
The citizens of Scandiano (Reggio Emilia) noticed that first, so they were outraged with the bartender and wrote a letter of protest addressed to the company making the distribution.
The company said not to have noticed these packets because they were mixed with many other packets containing different jokes, so sent back all the parcels to the producer, a small craft company.
The producer withdrew all the packets indicted and apologized for the unfortunate mistake, stating that it had never intended to harm the dignity of anyone and to be absolutely opposed to any form of violence.
Now the joke is no longer printed, but will remain difficult to collect all the packets on the market, for some time they will continue to circulate in bars.
On the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Team of Sugar Collection want to reflect on the fact that nobody is allowed to laugh or trivialize the horror, even through a simple sugar packet.

From a news published in the journal Astrophysic, it seems that the radio telescope in Grenoble, led by a group of astronomers Italian, French and Spanish, has identified a molecule of sugar floating in the space 26thousands light years from us. Some scholars argue that it represents one of the first elements of the primordial soup.
